What was the most precious thing you ever lost? I am sure it
was hard for you to give up hoping that you would find it again.
But, whatever you lost it was not as important or precious as
something that was lost to Jesus in this story!
Jesus asks us to "suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses
one." 1*. Using this
parable He wants us to think about what needed to be done to
find what was lost.
While something remains lost is worth NOTHING to the person who
owned it! But the person who knows how valuable it was will make
every effort to find it!
You and I, along with all mankind, were Jesus' lost treasure - lost in sin and without
hope 2*. - going to
have to be disregarded forever as worthless by a Holy and Just God
and cast away into a lost eternity. 3*. But Jesus came to earth "to seek and to save
that which was lost." 4*.
In His parable what steps does the woman take to try to find the
coin in her dimly lit house? "Does she not light a lamp?"
1*. But the lamp only
shows up the dust and dirt in which the coin was lost! She is going
to have to do something else to find the coin!
The lamp she lit might remind us of Jesus coming as "the Light of
the world." 5*. His
purity and holiness shows up how much sin there is in our lives and
makes us realise how unclean and sinful we really are!
6*.
The woman in the parable then realises that she needs to "sweep the
house and search carefully until she finds it?" 1*. She will not mind getting tired and
sweaty and dirty if only she can find her coin!
In Jesus' search for His lost treasure He was willing to go much further
than just getting tired and sweaty. Jesus needed to take away the
sin that hides you and me from God. 7*. For Him that meant going to the cross and dying
there as our substitute so that He could take away the sin that was
keeping us from God. 8*. In this way Jesus made it possible for you and
me to be restored to God. Do you want to repent
just now - wanting to be lifted from a life lost in sinfulness to a
life pleasing to God?. Jesus is able and willing to do that for
you! 9*.
When the woman is successful in finding her coin what does she do?
"She calls her friends and neighbours together and says, `Rejoice
with me; I have found my lost coin.'"
If there is so much joy and excitement over the finding of a coin,
how much greater the excitement and joy "in the presence of the
angels of God over one sinner who repents." 10*.
Will you turn from your sins today and thank Jesus for all that He
did to make it possible for Him to remove your sins. Trust in Him
today to forgive and save you and you will be saved, and heaven
will rejoice over another sinner made ready for Heaven.
Read Jesus' parable about this in Luke chapter 15, verses 8-10.
